The Miseducation of the Doodle - Writing Response

I found the Virginia Scofield anecdote to be really effective in making the case of how doodles help with thinking and focus, especially since it talked about doodling for a non-artistic reason. It made me think about how I tend to prefer taking physical notes for my classes, because I believed that the "muscle memory" associated with writing (as opposed to typing) helps you remember information more. Or as the article puts it, physical notes are superior because it utilizes one of the major learning modalities: kinesthetics. I find that this is true because I used to keep a digital dream journal before switching over to a physical dream journal. Thinking back, I can recite a few of the dreams that I wrote down, but admittedly, I can't remember any of the ones I typed.

Of the mentioned "basix," I think the first four stood out to me most, because I realized that I never really considered things like lettering, bullets, and connectors when doodling. I've always associated these with note-taking or sketching with a purpose in mind (ie. wireframes). The reason for this being that I thought doodles were "meaningless marks" like the author mentions, or in my case, just random drawings/sketches. I've always thought doodle had an artistic connotation to it, but the article defines it as being any visual marking that helps you think. That being said, this will definitely influence my process when it comes to doodling; I will consider using text and other note-taking habits like bullets and connectors to convey my ideas alongside drawings. After reading this, I now will look at doodles more as visual note-taking for my thoughts, rather than as random, meaningless drawings. I think doing so might actually really help with my creative process because it might help me find new ideas within my thoughts (since I'm now putting more of my words to paper), as opposed to before, when I would limit my doodles to just visuals (drawing what I thought would be interesting to just look at).
