[Week of 10/13]
This week I wanted to focus on "building up" shade, because for my past outputs, I've just been using darker colors to create depth (picking a color, and then using darker shades of that color at 100% opacity to "shade"). But this time I wanted to try more of a layering approach where I use the same color (at varying opacities) to paint over a spot again and again to result in a darker color. I figured that it'd be best to only use black and white first, to not overcomplicate things. Another reason why I wanted to start monochromatic was because I watched a speed paint online where their process was to paint their entire picture in B&W (shading and highlights included), and then use certain blending modes to add color on top. I wanted to try this, since I never thought about doing it this way. I plan to start my painting this week, and then experiment with coloring it next week.
I decided to paint a skull, because I thought it would have a lot of depth and shadows that I'd have to account for. I'm actually kind of shocked at how well it turned out, especially since I didn't use any outlines to define any areas, and the whole image is just composed of different layers of black. I'm excited to color, and add my own creative twists to it next week.
